PDF image speed tests

PDF supports many image formats. Ever wonder how their render times compare? Check it out below.

The tests below consist of a collection of PDF files, all containing the same single UHD (3860×2160) image at different bit depth and coded using different codecs. The image is No.10 Ship image from the ITE ultra-high definition/wide-color-gamut standard test set. The PDF is loaded in memory before being rendered by the browsers native PDF viewer.

HT J2K is an improvement to the J2K standard that makes J2K faster than JPEG 1 and PNG while supporting high-dynamic range, 48-bit color and lossless coding. HT J2K decoding in PDF is currently supported by Chromium-based browsers.
